Since the beginning of the pandemic, virtual dating has been on the rise. With the fear of infection taking over the usual fear of rejection, many have found it easier to stay safe indoors. This only makes health experts happy, as virtual dating has been deemed the safest way to engage with one another. Not to mention that your pockets remain full, rather than deciding on who’s going to pay for the all-out expensive meal that you thought was going to be impressive. It’s a win-win.
In normal conditions, whatever that means, a first date would be done face-to-face. However, this past year has shown how much we have had to relearn everything that we know about dating. This means staying away from physical touch until absolutely sure that your date is someone you would like to continue seeing. A great thing about virtual dating is that it provides more time to get to know someone behind the limits of a screen and become less stressed out about what to wear in the comfort of their own home. Amazingly enough, it allows more people to be open and honest about who they are and what they are looking for in a partner.
According to Web MD, because we are looking for someone who is taking the necessary precautions to stay safe, “many say they won’t go on a second date if their potential romantic partner: refuses to wear a mask (57%); disobeyed stay-at-home orders/social distancing guidelines (55%); or is unwilling to date virtually (21%).” In retrospect, virtual dating has made it easier to set boundaries and make the right decisions before wasting any time with someone that isn’t on the same wavelength as you.
So what can you do to make your virtual dates exciting? I’m glad you asked. Here are a few date ideas that can hopefully lead to more than just one.
Using anything from coloring pencils to paint, you and your date can allow your creative side to roam free during your virtual sip and draw. This can be anything from their favorite place to visit or a random image you find on Google. No one has to be the best artist, especially with a nice glass of wine to accompany you. It’s all about getting to know one another and how far you will go to be vulnerable with your date. Hopefully, your drawings are better than mine.
Just like the motto of Netflix and Chill, you and your date can pick any movie of your choosing. Only this time, on Netflix Party! This feature allows text chat, but you can opt for talking on the phone or any other platform that will allow you to watch the movie and connect with your date at the same time. Don’t be afraid to let your hair down, put on your comfy clothes, and pop a little popcorn. No judgment here, only fun.
In terms of game night, that is entirely up to you. There are a variety of games that you can play together online, like Houseparty. Or, if you’re all about old school, a game of Charades or Pictionary can be fun as well. Whatever feels right for you and your date, is always the best.
Similar to game night, your virtual dinner date is entirely up to you. This means that you can either order food from the same restaurant or eat whatever you have stashed away in the fridge. If you want to spice it up a little, you can even create a meal together using the same recipe, cooking at the same time with the same kind of conversation you would have at a restaurant or bar. However, if you don’t know how to cook, don’t try to poison yourself. I’m sure your date will understand.
Whatever you choose, remember to have fun. It can only go up from there!
